Human error resulting from fatigue-impaired performance has been identified as a key cause of many mistakes. Addressing the human factors when designing a control room can help to combat fatigue and so reduce human error.
The human body passes through a 24-hour cycle of biological processes - the circadian rhythm - which is controlled by the internal body clock. The cycle includes natural periods for sleeping, waking and eating, responses to biological triggers (such as waking up when the ambient lighting gets brighter) and fluctuations in body temperature and hormone levels.
Harp is able to advise on ways to promote alertness in the control room environment by simulating many of the natural stimuli that tell the body to become or remain alert - such as slightly raising lighting levels, increasing background or 'white' noise to overcome the silence of night, and similar manipulations of vibration, ventilation and temperature in a control room.
